The annual Colorado Pattern Challenge at the AAM Airpark was a success (despite the afternoon thunderstorms). There were 11 pilots and several volunteers to help make the event happen. Thanks to all who participated and watched.

The weather couldn’t have been nicer for a float fly for those that stayed home because of the forecast really missed out! Yep the weatherman missed it. Saturday was a perfect day for a float fly.
We had 35 pilots signed in and a large group of spectators to watch and enjoy the day. To all of you that came out to support the event, a big THANK YOU!
We raised $700.00 for St. Baldricks Childhood Cancer Research and I’m sure we will do even better for them this fall.

The Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum held its annual “Aeromodeling at the Hangar” event on Saturday February 15th. This event is to help introduce the public to all forms of model aviation from modeling to free flight to radio controlled flight and was attended by clubs and hobby shops from up and down the Front Range. The Arvada Associated Modelers was well represented with a large group of members displaying planes, doing actual flight demonstrations, working a flight simulator, and visiting with people of all ages that were interested in RC flying.

One of our club members, Dr. Dean Sadler, passed away on Monday February 10, 2014. Many knew and flew with him. Visitation will be Thursday, February 13th, from 4-7pm and funeral services will be Friday, February 14th. All are at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery.
A few AAM members went to Legacy High School in Broomfield on February 4 to present to their aeronautics class about flying quad helicopter drones. The drone was controlled via physical movements of an iPad. The students loved the demonstration and they even had their chance at controlling the drone.
Check out the video from the demo – the drone had an onboard camera which recorded the students actions.

What a great way and a great day to ring in the New Year. The wind was light, the temperature was tolerable, and the sun was peeking out. Seven contestants showed up with their eye on the prize of the coveted Frozen Finger trophy. Last year’s winner Dennis McNally brought the trophy, but didn’t compete. Events included a timed ground event through an obstacle course, a timed loop and landing, and a spot landing event. All planes survived the first event, but the second event knocked out two planes. Don’t ask Jim Manley what caused his plane to became the first casualty of the New Year. After the final event, points were tallied and indicated that Lanny Hansen was winner of the Expert class, and J.D. LaVasseur won in the Novice class and took home the trophy. Thanks go out to all contestants and spectators, who help make this such a fine event every year.
